A candidate, who have studied Urdu Literature at graduation level with 40 % marks, is eligible for Masters in Urdu through Distance mode.

There are number of factors who convenes this Centre to offer this program, such as:

• Jammu and Kashmir is the first state in the Indian Union with Urdu as her official language
• Urdu language is the source of rich cultural milieu of this Sub-Continent in general and Jammu and Kashmir in particular
• Urdu is the only language understood across all the geographical regions and ethnic groups of Jammu and Kashmir; hence, it is called as lingua-franqa
• Urdu is being taught in all the schools of Jammu and Kashmir especially in Valley
• Urdu proficient human resource is required in various departments of state like Police, Revenue, Education, Culture, Information etc.

There are almost 28 courses taught at MA Urdu level covering in-depth arenas of Classical Urdu poetry, classical Urdu Prose, literary criticism, evolution and history of Urdu language, Literary theory, Novel, Afsana etc.

• Yes, some courses are directly linked with market requirements like Translation: theory and Practice, Urdu Journalism, Teaching of Urdu.

Following are the fundamental objectives to offer Urdu at Post Graduate level through Distance Mode:

• To provide opportunities of higher learning to the lovers of Urdu language and literature
• To facilitate those who are not able to pursue this program through conventional mode of education
• To inculcate the aesthetic value of Urdu poetry and fiction among its learners
• To produce human resource for teaching Urdu language at different levels of school and higher education system of Jammu and Kashmir
• To enhance the literary taste among its aspirants
• To increase the vocabulary of enrolled learners
• To make the enrolled students employable amidst unemployment crisis.
• To enable the learners for textual appreciation

• This Centre has a huge infrastructural base stretching on thousands of square feets at Naseem Bagh besides state-of-the-art concrete infrastructure at sub-regional offices like Jammu, South Campus (Anantnag), North Campus (Baramulla)

• Yes, Centre for Distance and Online Education houses a good library equipped with more than 80, 000 books on all subjects offered by this Centre. It has a beautiful collection of Urdu books covering all the major aspects of courses of MA Urdu.

• There are two efficient and committed teachers (Assistant Professors) available in the Centre on permanent basis besides other 12 resource persons whose services are being availed as and when need arises.

• It is obligatory on part of this Centre to provide Self Learning Material (SLM) to its learners. This SLM is prepared by the teachers of this Centre besides other abled scholars of the subject working in different academic institutions within and outside the Jammu and Kashmir.

• Fee is nine thousand, three hundred and fifty (9350) for MA Urdu to payable in two equal instalments at the time of admission to first semester and third semester.

• The duration of MA Urdu is two academic years comprising of four semesters.

• The Centre for Distance and Online Education, University of Kashmir is not providing any scholarships to the enrolled students, however we recommend the cases to concerned governmental departments for the same.
